Valentine’s Day DIY: Love and Lace Canvas

I hope the team you were cheering for during the big game won and if not hopefully you had lots of great snacks to drown your sorrows. Thankfully Valentine’s Day is just around the corner which means chocolate, roses, hearts, and love themed everything. Although love is in the air and everywhere, my Valentine’s Day decor is sadly lacking. But Valentine’s Day gifts take priority over decor in my budget. So if I want to show my home some love, any project I choose has to be inexpensive and I thrive on that challenge. Going through my stash of crafting supplies, I found some spray paint from another project and a bit of inexpensive lace. That inspired me to create a Valentine’s Day DIY: a Love and Lace canvas.

Valentine's Day DIY Love and Lace Canvas

It’s really easy and quick to make and doesn’t take a lot of supplies. You can make our own in just one evening.

To create your own Valentine’s Day DIY, all you need is:

Supplies for Love and Lace Canvas DIY

  • Blank canvas
  • Lace larger than the canvas
  • The word “Love” in large size font, printed out on paper
  • Acrylic paint
  • Spray paint
  • Paint brushes
  • Utility knife
  • Masking tape

First you need to find a font that you like and there are lots of great free fonts online.

I had a very difficult time narrowing down the selection, but there are some things to keep in mind. You need to make sure that the font will be easy to read and not too difficult to cut out as well.

When you decide on your font, it’s time to use a word processing program on your computer to make the font as large as you can so it will fit on a full sheet of paper.

Once that’s all set, print out your “Love” and it’s time to cut it out and make your template.

Cutting out a word to make a template

Place the piece of paper on a safe surface to cut on (like a cutting board or rotary mat). Using a sharp utility knife, carefully cut out all of the letters. Make sure that you don’t cut through any of the lines and save all the scraps because you are going to use every part of word and paper in this project. Your template should look something like this:

Cutting out word 4a

Set aside the cutout “Love” to use later.

Place the white template on your canvas centering the word and tape it down.

You can use a ruler to make sure the spacing from the sides and top and bottom are equal or you can just eyeball it.

Painting Using the Word Template

It’s time to paint!

Using red acrylic paint carefully paint in “Love”. Similar to a stencil, paint from the outside edge and work your way in. Odds are your fingers are going to get paint on them but it’s acrylic paint so no worries. 😀

Wait till the paint is dry and carefully peel the template off.

Painted "Love"

If you need to touch up the lines a bit you can do that, but it doesn’t need to be perfect by any means. It looks nice now, but it needs a bit more romance.

Now the cutout comes into play.

Placing Cutout and Lace

Place the cutout, which you saved from the template, over the painted “Love”. Then carefully place the piece of lace over that and secure with masking tape. The cutout word can have a tendency to slip around so you have to be careful placing the lace on top and moving it to a place to spray paint.

Spray Painted Lace on Canvas

Spray painting must also be done carefully.

As long as you spray paint at least 6 inches away from the canvas and relatively straight down at the canvas, you shouldn’t have a problem with the letters slipping out of place.

Thoroughly spray paint the lace so that there aren’t any white areas. Now you have to be patient and wait for the spray paint to dry because you don’t want to smudge the design by removing the lace too early.

Carefully peel back the lace and remove the cutout letters.

Love and Lace DIY Canvas Reveal

Voila! The Love and Lace canvas is complete.

Some of the cutouts moved around a bit on mine, but I think it actually adds even more interest to it, which I like. If you want to varnish it you can, but you don’t need to. Just hang it on the wall and add a bit of a loving touch to your home.

Finished Love and Lace DIY Canvas

Pretty isn’t it? And yes I was working in the living room as you can see by the reflection in the mirror. 🙂

My home now shows a bit more of the love that is always present. Now I’m wondering if I need to spruce up my home a bit more. Spring will come…eventually.
