Rustic Outdoor Mason Jar Chandelier DIY with Solar Lights

Spring is in full swing here in Minnesota, the backyard is calling me…and telling me it needs some new decor and more cleaning (like picking up sticks which I hate doing). So I will leave the sticks for another day and focus on making things pretty. Winters can be exceptionally harsh here in good old Minnesota and most things left outside tend to rust or disintegrate. While having a wonderful backyard is a major priority for me, the only things I leave outside are either created for the outdoors or things that I don’t really care if they get wrecked.

So when it came to lighting my backyard table, I needed something that would last outside, but I also needed it to be inexpensive. I have seen a lot of adorable outdoor chandeliers with solar lights instead of using regular lights. This is an idea that I can get behind, but a traditional chandelier doesn’t really go with my decor. So with a lot of help from my dad, I was able to create a rustic mason jar outdoor chandelier with solar lights.

I love how it doesn’t necessarily look like a solar chandelier. The mason jars and wood really give this chandelier the “look” I was going for and will also withstand the unpredictable Minnesota weather.

This outdoor mason jar chandelier DIY has lots of rustic charm, it doesn’t require a lot of supplies, you can make in one afternoon, and it’s even solar powered.

A New Twist on a BLT: Grilled Brie and Bacon Sandwich

I’ve been doing some research on weird and wacky holidays. There seems to be something to celebrate everyday of the year. Did you know that it was National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day on the 12th?  It is National Soft Pretzel Month and BLT Sandwich Month? Tomorrow is actually National That Sucks Day which is appropriate for the impending Tax Day. 😀

Grilled Cheese Day makes a lot of sense; not only because grilled cheese is delicious and easy to make, but it is also inexpensive for all those people who may not be getting refunds this year.

With grilled cheese, soft pretzels, and BLTs all being celebrated this month, I decided to create a new twist on the classic BLT and the grilled cheese sandwich. It’s the grilled brie and bacon sandwich with sun dried tomato spread and alfalfa sprouts (instead of lettuce).

And it turned out deliciously! The salty bun and bacon with the melty and mild brie is a lovely contrast. The fresh sprouts add a bit of crunch and the sun dried tomato spread adds another yummy layer of flavor.

DIY Backyard Scrabble

Although the weather has turned a bit chilly here in Minnesota, spring is coming…I just know it! So despite the cooler temperatures, I want to keep the outdoor theme going with a DIY to enjoy in the backyard with family and friends. Honestly I would love to have a huge chess board in my yard with four foot tall pieces, but I don’t know where I would put it. But the idea did direct me to other games that could possibly be enlarged for outdoor fun. I saw an awesome backyard Yahtzee game, but my family is more into word games than dice games. So a big backyard Scrabble set is the perfect DIY project.

It turned out great and the tiles weren’t difficult to make just time consuming. You need 100 Scrabble tiles for a game so this turned into a weekend project.

I’ve seen some backyard Scrabble sets out of ceramic tile, but I decided to make the Scrabble tiles out of wood fiber board for a couple of reasons. First, wood fiber is much lighter than tile so it’s much easier to play with. Also the wood fiber tiles won’t break as easily as ceramic, which makes them much more kid friendly. They are also cheaper to make. But you will need some workshop tools to make these wood Scrabble tiles.
